Many museums and historical sites are mainly visited by tourists but not local people. Why this is a case and what can be done to attract local people to visit these places?

Although there are museums and historical sites in local areas, residents tend to ignore these cultural and historical places. Indeed, tourists are the main visitors to these places. There some underlying causes of this. However, solutions can be taken to help museums and historical sites reach local audiences.

To begin with, as local residents seem familiar with museums and historical sites located in their living areas. Therefore, instead of visiting local cultural and historic sites, citizens gravitate towards other unfamiliar places. Besides, in modern society, there have been many leisure opportunities in cities. For example, currently, there are many tourist attraction including resorts, hotels in Da Nang, providing people with entertained activities. These places are more attractive to local people than museums or historical sites. Hence, people especially young generations opt for these activities rather than spending time learning local culture and history.

However, the possible solution for museums and historical sites is to organize games and festivals, this would attract young people to visit these places. For example, many museums in Hanoi organize traditional festivals annually including games such as water puppet, which not only attract local citizens but also foreigners. Furthermore, cutting the entrance fees would be the next solution. By implementing this measure, many people of different social status could have opportunities to visit these places, increasing the number of visitors.

In conclusion, as local people are already familiar with local museums and historic sites, and there is an increase in recreational activities in cities, museums and historical sites fail to attract local visitors. However, by organizing more festivals and cutting entrance fees this problem can be tackled.
