People are living longer. Some people think that it causes big problems. Other, however, think ageing populations has many advantages for business, government and for society in general. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In today’s world, people have a longer life expectancy than before, and this call into question whether the trend brings advantages or disadvantages to business, government and social welfare. In my opinion, an ageing population would offer both benefits and drawbacks to our society. However, its drawbacks are devastating.

Granted, as the population growing older, the cost of paying for pension and health benefits would rise, giving rise to the financial pressure in the governments. Indeed, the dominantly old population is synonymous with the majority of people are eligible to receive a pension. Therefore, the authorities have to spend more parts of their budget to pay for its citizen’s retirement. As a result, several aspects such as education, or transportation would lack financial support to enhance their qualities. Furthermore, the elderly are more vulnerable than young people, making demands on health care systems.

Conversely, it undeniable that the elderly rarely commit crimes. Hence, having an ageing population would play a main part in curbing crime rates. For example, although Japan is considered to have the oldest living civilization in the world, its citizens are virtually law-abiding people in that is crime rates always be lower than in other countries. Additionally, due to the eroding of cultural identities of each country, the elderly play an essential role in preserving these cultural differences as they can uphold morals, values and pass on traditions in the community.

In conclusion, despite the advantages offered by an ageing population, I believe that its drawbacks are more significant as it increases the pressure in the government’s budget and health care systems.
