The topic of whether modern houses should be constructed in the same style as existing houses in the locality, or it is more beneficial to build houses based on people’s personal styles have been controversial. Personally, I believe that people should have the right to design houses according to their preference.

To begin with, there are a number of reasons why some assert that houses should be shared a common design. The first reason is the uniformity of houses could bring people a sense of community. Indeed, the different style of modern houses can lead to the loss of local identity, and these houses would be incompatible with other traditional houses. This would be an eyesore for many people. The further reason is personalized house’s design could contribute to social stratification and classify different social status in the society. Admittedly, a house is a symbol of the financial background of its owner. Therefore, if a householder has a smaller or less attractive house compared to others, they may be underestimated by his/her neighbours.

However, I believe that local houses should have their own individuality in the term of its financial benefits. First, Traditional construction materials such as woods are prohibitively priced nowadays. Due to widespread deforestation, wood-based materials are dissipated, leading to the exorbitant prices of these building materials. As a result, middle and low-class people are unable to afford houses following the traditional style. For example, Because of the prohibitive prices of tradition-oriented houses, many young workers in Vietnam have to take lodgers or rent flats mile away from the city centre to live. Furthermore, as traditional materials are vulnerable to exterior factors, maintenance tasks are required to be taken regularly, creating unnecessary expenses.

In conclusion, although the uniformity of houses’ traditional designs could create a classless society. I believe that personalized house’s designs would bring more economic and social advantages to society.
