In some countries, there has been an increase in the number of parents who educate their children themselves at home instead of sending them to school. Do you think the advantages of this overweigh the disadvantages?
Teaching children at home rather than entrusting their education to either public or private school has been increasingly acceptable. From my perspective, there are both strong and weak points of this. However, its drawbacks are eclipsed by its benefits.
To begin with, home-schooled children can probably avoid school bullying. It is evident that there is an increased number of children who experienced bullying at school. In fact, being bullied impinges upon those students’ behaviours and mentalities. Recent research concluded that in British public schools, more than half of students who experienced bullying said they had become anxious as a result, and some of them even had suicidal thoughts and self-harmed. Therefore students studying at home can avoid this risk. Furthermore, homeschoolers can study topics that they keen on. Home education makes lessons less teacher-led and more about autonomous learning, thus, allowing children to put more emphasis on the subjects they want instead of subjects imposed.
However, without formal curricula, homeschoolers might study unsystematically, and this can make them fail in standardized exams. Admittedly, because of lax or no regulation, parents who homeschool now have an unfettered authority to decide the method of teaching, and what curriculum materials to use. Therefore, if those parents lack knowledge, their children could study illogically, leading to poor academic achievement. Nevertheless, parents who are well-educated can often better educate their children. Thomas Edison, for example, was the world’s prolific inventor and a famous homeschooler.
In conclusion, although the disadvantage that homeschooling may have is it provides an unsystematic education, I believe its downside is overshadowed by its benefits as it protects students from bullying and allows them to study autonomously.
