WRITING TASK 2 HEALTHCARE

Some people think that good health is important to everyone, so medical services should not be run by profit-making companies. Do the advantages of private health care outweigh the disadvantages?

It is undeniable that people have become more health-conscious, and they are concerned by the existence of private healthcare systems. Arguments against non-public medical providers are because of their focus on profit maximization, while care should be the ultimate goal. In my opinion, the benefit of private healthcare cannot outstrip its negative effect.

On the one hand, the advantages of private healthcare are hard to ignore, and many people advocate eschewing the state system in favor of its private version. In other words, non-public players broaden choices, and as a result, people can personalize their check-ups as well as favoring a health consultant that they prefer. Furthermore, the participation of private providers helps release pressure on the patients, since all the services are infinitely faster comparing with the lengthy procedures of public healthcare. In this regard, private medical services have far-reaching benefits in terms of keeping people healthy.

On the other hand, the above-mentioned positive effects cannot outweigh the drawbacks of private healthcare. Firstly, private healthcare packages may include hidden charges for unnecessary items, and sometimes only the rich can afford to pay medical bills. At the same time, state systems are likely to be free of charge and are accessible to every resident who needs basic healthcare treatment. Second, operating as a business, non-public hospitals might locate in populous areas rather than the isolated districts, where access to public services are limited. All in all, the private sector does little to improve people’s well-being.

In sum, as more people are more concerned about their health, profit-making companies should not be allowed to provide medical services. Although these services are more advantageous in speed and variety, I believe that because of profit incentives, the negative effects would outdo the benefits when it comes to healthcare.
