Topic 1: As well as making money, businesses also have social responsibilities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Every company have always strived to make a profit through its development, yet it is increasingly believed that social obligations are also an important part of company consideration. I completely agree with the idea that businesses should do more for society rather than solely focus on profits.
On the one hand, businesses must concentrate on making profits in order to ensure their existence. It seems logical that high profits are a must enabling companies to cover their expenses, such as employees' wages, payments for liabilities and facilities. On top of these costs, there is a need for continuous investments in company operations which comes from inside and outside of companies. It is highly significant in case the competitions keep strong growth and expansion throughout the year. With a high profit, businesses will get a higher chance to call for external investments. What’s more, it should be noted that if companies are not in good financial health, they can’t have enough resources to do social obligations. Therefore, having financial health is the first step if they want to think about social responsibilities.
On the other hand, I suppose that companies need to pay more attention to social obligations instead of solely maximizing profits. The fundamental one they can do is to maintain or increase the product quality. There are many cases that companies deliberately ignore the standard process with an aim of reducing cost, but it is detrimental to consumers’ health in the long term. Therefore, it requires strict control and consumer-centric direction to make social health ensure. In addition, companies also have to care about employees’ working environment and compensation. For instance, companies should listen to staff feedback regularly, and give the proper wage to cover their expenses. Finally, I like the idea that businesses give a proportion of their profit to social activities such as facilities buildings, educational scholarships and medical support. It is highly recommended in developing countries to fill gradually the gap between poor and rich people.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that besides considering making profits as a key for company development, companies have to place more and more importance on social obligations as well.
