The main one is to drive the way for people to perceive the current situation in the world with precise information. For example, COVID-19 - a recent global pandemic has become more and more alert. If citizens choose not to watch the news, they cannot obtain knowledge about this disease, such as the number of people under quarantine, as well as methods in order to keep healthy.
Moreover, news is vital not just in terms of broadening our horizons but as a means of seeking for an answer to your circumstance. To put it simply, people who are under unemployment may not want to be stuck in the impoverished lifestyle forever, so reading newspaper about recruitment information can be advantageous for them.
