The government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizens' health rather than on protecting the environment

Answer

There is an idea that governments’ subsidies should be allocated to medical research instead of protecting environment. Although I have to admit that medical research should be paid more attention, protecting wildlife and slowing climate change process have to be high on the agenda.

In my opinion, nowadays, financial aids from government for research new drugs and vaccines are not enough and need enforcing. More and more novel deadly viruses, including SARS-COV 2 causing COVID 19, have emerged and had detrimental effects not only on residents’ health but also on global economy. Due to COVID 19, for example, many people have died or had to quarantine in their homes, which makes stock prices plunge and a range of corporations in hospitality industry out of business. However, we could have not to suffer as much as we do now if there had been enough money for trials of SARS vaccine, which was investigated in 2003 and has never been produced, because these two viruses are similar. Now, the high demand for COVID 19 vaccine results in a vaccine race, and in order to rapidly manufacture a safe and effective vaccine, pharmaceutical companies need more financial support from governments.

Nevertheless, I completely disagree that protecting the environment is not worth to be support. In fact, keeping the environment clean is a cheap and effective way to protect human’s health. By contrast, it is polluted air and water which spread various disease-causing agents such as bacteria and molds, triggering pneumonia, cholera and even life-threatening conditions such as cancer. Furthermore, the consequences of climate change are increasingly visible throughout time as there have been more heat swings, devastating floods swiping out crops of people in poor areas and tsunami which causes home loss in many countries. Only by slowing this process down, is the Earth habitable for human and this responsibility should be shared by governments in every country.

In conclusion, it is flawed to claim that government ought to prioritize medical research and ignore responsibility to protect the environment.
