HELP! and thanks a lot!
Topic: Many foods are shipped from far away. Some people think that eating local food is better environmentally and economically. Do you think the advantages outweigh its disadvantages?
In recent years there has been an increase in demand for foreign foods. This leads to increasing food miles which can cause many detrimental effects on environmental and economical issues. But I argue that consuming local food which brings a lot of advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
In terms of the environment, the transport of food is resulting in major problems first the freight services can cause contamination and hinder efforts to fight climate change and cut down on emissions. For example, by shipping food from distant places, a means of transport can generate a large amount of greenhouse gas such as carbon dioxide or nitrous dioxide. Second, crops for export have been grown as monoculture, resulting in the habitat destruction of animals and plants, including endangered species. Deforestation in the Amazon, for instance, to raise cattle for beef export is causing the loss of thousands of species and putting other species on brink of extinction.
From the economic perspective, there are benefits and drawbacks of eating food which is grown locally. On the one hand, if customers purchase products from local farmers, this will boost the local economy. The amount of money will remain within the local community rather than lining the pockets of distant shareholders. On the other hand, thanks to the globalization of food production, the market provides a vast choice of products for the customers when people solely eat local food, they will be able to enjoy only a narrow range of food items which in season.
In conclusion, although spenders solely have the limited choices of particular foods in their living places, I believe that it is better for the environment and the economy with benefits that outweigh the disadvantages.
