In the past, shopping was a routine domestic task. Many people nowadays regard it as a hobby.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Until recently, shopping was generally classified as a household chore. But in recent years, people has increasingly taken it up as a pastime activity. Despite the inevitable drawbacks, I do believe this trend could be beneficial to various aspects of the society.

As a leisure activity, shopping poses some disadvantages to our daily life. The main shortcoming is that doing the shopping is time-consuming and extravagant. A lot of customers spend a huge amount of their time browsing through store items, which sometimes results in wasting money on unnecessary purchases. In addition, over-shopping is deemed to be harmful to the environment. For instance, in England annually, a huge number of clothing items are disposable after their first-time use.

On the other hand, shopping’s advantages to the society is undeniable. Firstly, shopping is a lucrative business, which greatly encourages the development of the economy. Today, the growth of shopping gives people plenty of job opportunities, which in turn lowers the unemployment rate as well as improves living standard. Secondly, as human life become busier, shopping is essential as a mean of entertainment. People can derive much pleasure from shopping, especially for those who suffer from work pressure. Moreover, the of appearance of e-business nowadays makes shopping easier and more comfortable.

In conclusion, shopping emergence as a leisure interest is advantageous to the society in general but it can also be disadvantageous for people who become obsessed with buy things.
