Topic: Some people think that newly built houses should follow the style of the old houses in the local areas, while others think that people should have freedom to build houses of their own styles.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion?

Essay:

In these years, there is a dramatic rise in population, which leads to a constantly increasing demand for housing. A huge number of new houses have recently been built, arousing the idea that contemporary residences’ architecture should bear a resemblance to the traditional style of long-existing houses. Nevertheless, I personally believe that such an idea seems impractical in the modern world.

One might argue that new designs in the same neighborhood could sabotage the ancient uniqueness. For them, the homogeneity of façades in one area add a touch of beauty to that locality. In fact, there still remain some regions in the world which have gained in popularity for their distinctive charm beyond a riotous modernized world by preserving time-honored tectonic elites. Hoi An ancient town in Vietnam or Fenghuang county of China could exemplify this point, when new dwellings are designed to blend in with their long-established surroundings. However, in my opinion, this is, obviously, not a viable practice to be applied throughout the world, on the ground that traditional houses are either one-story tall with small rooms or fussy and uncomfortable to live in, especially in today’s age which most people need a wide-enough and convenient space.

As opposed to the impracticality of such an idea, there are strong grounds for encouraging people to build houses of their own ways. This does, first and foremost, enable individuals to boot their creativity and make a more colorful world. Diversity in architecture might bring everyone a feeling of freshness and curiosity, as well as stimulate the ability to learn new things, instead of monotonous styles in every locality. Secondly, designing a shelter following one’s own interests might help them feel comfortable, reduce stress and meet their needs. Take extended families as an example, a spacious and cool place of residence will be best appropriate to them, not a cramped space like in ancient towns.

All in all, I am firmly of the view that complying with traditional architecture is not a working idea in this present days. Using different building designs and decorations is the best way to cater for individuals’ needs.
