The only way to improve the safety on our road is to have stricter punishment for driving offenders. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is undeniable that reckless driving and violation of traffic laws is undoubtedly responsible for a large number of accidents and stricter forms of penalties are the only way to reduce them. In my view, I partly disagree with this assertion and my opinion will be clarified in the following paragraphs.

First of all, road safety includes numerous of factors. To be specific, poor road conditions is believed to be the primary cause of traffic accidents. For example, the deterioration of highway structures might raise difficulties for drivers to keep their vehicles in the right lane and resulting in car crashes. Therefore, road improvements would be an effective way in ensuring traffic safety. Furthermore, weather condition is also a significant influence to road users. Many serious casualties are caused by poor weather conditions such as restricted visibility due to snow or heavy rainfall. It is true that besides improving traffic facilities, providing adequate and timely weather forecasting information is also important in keeping the road safe.

On the other hand, there is an increase number of accidents occurring due to careless driver and law breaching. Therefore, stricter punishment is necessary in dealing with drunken driver and others who intentionally disobey traffic regulations. However, traffic rules’ disobedient is mainly happened because of the lack of law-abiding awareness. For instance, in many developing countries, governments are failing to provide enough educational program in instructing traffic regulations. Therefore, penalizing should not be considered the only way to maintain road safety.

In conclusion, there are certain situations where drivers are not responsible for a particular accident. I believe that apart from increasing the level of penalties, the government should implement other effective measures.
