Writing task 1: The graph below shows the unemployment rates in the US and Japan between March 1993 and March 1999. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.

The graph gives information about some striking differences between the US and Japan's unemployment rates from March 1993 to March 1999.


Overall, there was a pronounced downtrend in the proportion of unemployment in the US, which contrasted sharply with that in Japan. After the period March 1993, the level of jobless people in the two countries recorded a marginal fluctuation and returned approximately the same values.


As can be seen from the given line graph, it was in March 1993 that the joblessness rate in the U.S reach a record high, which was 7%, while that in Japan stood at 2.5% and became the lowest rate recorded. In March 1996, the number of Japanese being jobless made up almost 4.5%, which was a substantial increase compared to the initial rate, while the opposite was true for the unemployment rates in the US significantly declined to 5.5%.


It was in the period between March 1998 and March 1999 that a slight fluctuation was recorded in the US and Japanese job markets varying around 5%. Furthermore, the figures were remaining its stable trend after the marked March 1999.
