Writing task 1: Map

The maps illustrate alterations at Queen Mary Hospital during the 40-year period after its erection in 1960.

Overall, it is clear that farmland and shopping centre was removed while other buildings appeared as parts of the hospital’s layout since 1980. Cancer centre was the only construction that expanded over the period shown.

In 1960, the year when the hospital was finished, there are four main areas namely shopping center, farmland, car park and the hospital main building. However, after the first 20 years, farmland and shopping centre which had lied in the left-hand side of the first map were removed, making way for three new facilities which were cancer centre, pharmacy and nursing school. The farmland was converted into a nursing school while the other two new facilities each occupied half of the area which had been the shopping centre at first with the pharmacy placed adjacent to the hospital.

In 2000, the positions of cancer centre, pharmacy and hospital remained the same, facing the main road. However, in terms of size, nursing school and car park were reduced to half for the expansion cancer centre while pharmacy and hospital remained unchanged.
