Topic: The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main feature and make comparisons where relevant.
The provided line graph depicts the percentage of population age 65 years and above in three countries, namely USA, Sweden and Japan from 1940 to 2040.
In 1940, around 10% of America’s population were aged 65 years old and over, compared to nearly 7% of Swedish and 5% of Japanese people. Over the next 50 years, the proportion of elderly people in USA and Sweden increased gradually and stood at well under 15% in 1990. In contrast, after a mild decreased to less than 5% since 1950, the percentage of Japanese people aged 65 and above remained stable until early 2000s.
However, from 2030 and onwards, the percentage of elderly population in Japan is predicted to rocket to roughly 27% while that of Sweden and USA are fairly lower, at about 25% and 23% respectively.
In general, the population ages 65 years old and above in all three nations shows a ceiling trend in a century. Notably, Japan is expected to have the most significant changes in the number of elderly people over the period.
