The line graph plots the amount of goods (in million tonnes) by four means of transportation, namely: Road, Water, Rail, Pipeline during the period 1974-2002 in the UK.

Overall, throughout the period, Road was the most favorable way of transporting while pipeline was the least one. In addition, despite having a same start, the amount of goods shipped by water and by rail saw a disparity towards the end of the period.

Before 1974, the quantities of goods transported were no higher than 40 million tonnes for means except for road transport, which transported the highest amount of goods (70 million tonnes) in 1974. The figure for this means of transport continued to grow sharply, reaching 100 million tonnes in 2002. The pattern for pipeline transport was quite similar, with the figure significantly increased fourfold throughout the period, hitting 21 million tonnes in 2002.

Since 1978, there was a sharp rise in the quantity of products transported by water, to an approximate of 60 million tonnes, setting it far apart from its closes counterpart – rail transport, which still fluctuated around 30 million tonnes until 1994. The figures for both means then grew to 65 and 41 million tonnes accordingly at the end of the period.
