The table compares the salaries that secondary / high school teachers earned in various countries in 2009.
Overall, teachers in Luxembourg got both the highest starting and maximum salary. Additionally, it took teachers in Luxembourg, Japan and Korea over 30 years in order to achieve top salary, while their counterparts in Australia and Denmark only needed less than 10 years.
It is clear from the table that Australia was the country with the lowest starting salary for secondary / high school teachers with 28,000. This was also the case for those who had from 9 years of experience at just under 50,000. Regarding Denmark, although the salary it offered for teachers who just started their career was the second highest among the five countries at 45,000, this figure increased very slightly for senior teachers, making it the second lowest maximum salary.
As regards Luxembourg, it paid 80,000 for starters. This number subsequently grew by nearly 40,000 for 15-year-experience teachers, and reached 132,000 as maximum salary for people who spent 30 years teaching. Similarly, teachers in Japan and Korea had to spend 37 years and 34 years, respectively, to reach their top salary. After those number of years, the salaries paid to teachers at these two countries increased significantly by 2.5 and 2 times, in turn.
