Topic: The graph below presents the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in three different countries from 1940 till now. The graph also shows the projected figures for the period from present to 2040. Write a report for a university lecturer comparing and contrasting the data.
The given graph illustrates the rate of population aged 65 and over in Japan, USA and Sweden from 1940 till now and predicted the figure for the period from present to 2040. Overall, the proportion of the elderly population increased in all three countries and it is predicted that these percentages will reach to around 25% in 2040.
It can be seen from the chart that the most noticeable trend is of Japan. Standing at 5% in 1940, this rate fell slightly during the long period before rising back again to 5% in 2005 and overtaking this level in 2017. The figure then is predicted to increase considerably in the future and become the highest rate in the three countries in 2040 by reaching slightly more than 25%.
According to the chart, In 1940 the percentage of population aged 65 or over was highest in USA (10%) as compared to Sweden (7%) and Japan (5%). However the figures for life expectancy of older citizens in both USA and Sweden rose gradually and reach the same level in 1990, these rates were higher far from Japan’s level. Moreover, predictions show that the rates of population aged 65and over in USA and Sweden will increase the next 20 years and the USA become the country which has lowest the ratio of elder population (under 25%) in 2040 and this ratio in Sweden is 25%.
