There are many benefits to a good education. Therefore, a university education should be offered to all students, not just students with good high school grades. Do you agree or disagree?
It is evident that a well-rounded education will bring tangible benefits for the common good. In this regard, there is a widely-held belief that tertiary education should be provided to all students, irrespective of their academic competence in high school which, I opine, is not entirely commendable.
Primarily, that uncontrolled entrance could bring about a glut of unemployed graduates means those who academically performed poorly during high school should be deprived of university education. The labor market has already been filled in many countries, especially developed ones, resulting in baristas with honors in law, mining engineers working in fields unrelated to their educational backgrounds, or marketing majors working in bakeries. The byproduct of this is shaking confidence on the grounds that one finds himself/herself working in an environment which is incompatible with the knowledge acquired during university years.
The bottom line is that education may be undervalued provided that students registered for higher education courses are not selected based on past academic performance. By the time students matriculate, they had been taking some formal examinations and had passed high school levels according to the results of such exams. Therefore, they may well see further academic progress in doing well in an examination. Moreover, it is the absence of educational background while evaluating one's competency for entering university that can make the applicants consider the condition as a blatant discrimination leading to the idea of studying for exams being a waste of time and effort, hence undervaluing the nature of education.
Notwithstanding, it should also be admitted that although formal examinations are an integral part of the high school syllabus, they cannot be considered as a fully reliable criterion in order to filter students. Envisage, for example, a student who feels nervous while sitting an exam, or another who is not able to demonstrate his true knowledge through so-called paper exams. Pondering on these cases, depriving all students of university education would not be sagacious.
In summary, it appears that selective acceptance of students to university based on high school grades is a sensible policy; otherwise, there will be too many graduates who place little value on education, leading to fewer job prospects for high attainers and 'most able' pupils.
