Writing Styles

I need some help understanding a problem I have. When I need to write anything from a recommendation letter to a term paper for school, I try to write it in a way that the language is not boring. I use heightened words and make the reader visualize the point I'm trying to make while also being direct. And yet, no one seems to like my writing style. Now I asked my husband how he would write the same papers, and his writing style to me is very basic, almost caveman level. But this is what every audience seems to like. My question is, why does my heightened and more eloquent form of writing get more rejection than that of the written caveman grunts that everyone seems to love? I welcome all comments because I really don't understand why my writing is so terrible.

Perhaps you use excessive hyperbole or circumlocution, or a much higher register than the situation warrants. Please give an example of what you are talking about. What is "caveman" style?
