Cracking the TOEFL Page 131

Is it better for students to gain real-world experience than to spend their time in a classroom?

In my view the classroom experience should be preferred over the real-world experience. I feel this way because educational institutions are preparing stages for students. Spending time in classrooms is a neccessary step in order to get ready for the next step; gaining real-world experience.

One reason I believe that spending time in classroom is the better choice is that classrooms can be seen as a study environment where failures and mistakes are tolerated. Whereas this is not the case in the real-world. Not meeting a deadline might be excusable on the educational level. By contrast, submitting delayed work to your superior can result to more tragic consequences, such as unemployment.

Another reason is that teaching in classrooms can prepare students for upcoming issues they may face when diving into the world of employment. For instance how to present oneself in front of the crowd. The act of gaining real-world experience requires certain personal attributes in order to make it a fully effective experience. Classrooms can prepare students for this requirement. Since classes have time to do so, while companies are restricted to deadlines and resources.

To conclude, the classroom should be prefered until the student feels prepared enough to face the reality, which is certainly not playground but life filled with responsibilities students then need to take care of.
