Some schools require first-year students to take the same courses, whereas other schools allow students to select the classes they want. Which policy do you think is better for the first-year students and why?
In my opinion First-year students benefit more by taking the same courses at school. I believe this because schools should take the responsibility in giving first-year students a solid background education rather than leaving it to those students making highhanded course selections.
One reason that schools should require first-year student to take same courses is that having same courses ensure students to have a basic level of knowledge when passing the exams. Consequently basic knowledge helps to orientate oneself to further course selections. Students develop a better sense for selecting courses that actually matters to his/her study career. In the field of design for instance, drawing is a basic skill. Since drawings can help students to express their ideas more precisely. Learning basic skills first can help students to decide which design descipline suits the best.
Another reason is that students being in same classes from the start do have it easier to make acquaintaince of other students from other departments. This makes sense for mulitdisciplinary projects and group tasks. Working in teams is becoming essential in this globalized world. Knowing each other from the beginning leads to a more relaxed working atmosphere in class and campus. In the design field for example, working on a project with strangers usually is uncomfortable as you have to discuss issues sooner or later. Trust and familiarity are required conditions for good discussions.
In conlusion, starting from the same level on helps to find orientation in a student's environment. Structuring one's own time schedules feels easier after the first-year as the student roughly knows where to go from this point on.
