Writing motivation statement for applying scholarship

Statement of Motivation

Currently and in the future, world in general and Indonesia in particular will always face up problems about fulfilment of food needs. Foods are human’s basic needs. Therefore, food security and food self-sufficiency are very important to be concerned by every country. In 2015, among 250 million Indonesian population, there are 19,4 million people who suffer from food shortages every day. This condition shows that until now, fulfilment of food needs in Indonesia has not been achieved yet. In fact, Indonesia has a lot of natural resources that have potential to secure Indonesian food needs. But, these abundance natural resources are not enough to ensure Indonesia’s food security if it is not accompanied by the ability of the country to produce its own foodstuff.
Nowadays most of the staple food in Indonesia are obtained by importing. Wheat, soy bean, milk, and even sugar are some examples of the imported food. Wheat as raw material of flour is imported from country with four seasons. Indonesia has a lot of local tropical crop that can be used as flour material instead of using imported wheat, in instance, Cassava. Unfortunately, with this potential, Indonesia has not been able to develop any industry that use that tropical crop to produce and cover the needs of Indonesian flour. Based on aforementioned issues, Bandung Institute of technology (ITB), where I got my bachelor degree, is currently having a research to produce fermented cassava based flour that we called as Fercaf. Presently, I am the member of ITB Fermented Cassava Flour research team that responsible to develop the application of the cassava flour product. This cassava flour product still has to be research further before it could be produce in industrial scale to meet Indonesian food needs. In this case, the roles of food engineers are required in the design, operation, and development of industrial-scale Fercaf production.
As chemical engineering bachelor graduate, I already learned the basic lore of chemical processes and some of food science fundamentals. But still, I feel that I am lacking of knowledge about how to combine both chemical process and food science to make an efficient plant design of food industry. In Food Technology Master Program at Wageningen University, the comprehensive knowledge on the efficient use of natural resources and sustainable food processes development would be taught. I would like to initiate a master thesis project or join an internship company that related to the utilization of Indonesia’s local natural recourses. By having this holistic understanding and experiences, I will return to Indonesia, rejoin the Fercaf team at ITB, and implement it to promote Fercaf as Indonesia’s industrial-scale local product. I hope the success of this project can burn the spirit of many other researcher to start new study on local product development for the sake of Indonesia’s food security and self-sufficiency in the future.
Besides that, I also plan to join a faculty team in the department of Food Engineering that recently formed by ITB, in order to overcome Indonesia’s food security and self-sufficiency problems. This new department is aiming to create future food engineers that could propose Indonesia’s local food industry and reduce the import of staple food. To make it happen, this department need many lecturers that can raise student’s awareness of the importance of their role in the Indonesia’s local product development. With my experiences and knowledge that I will learn in Food Technology Master Program at Wageningen University, I believe, I can be a better lecturer for them, contribute to make the aim of this department happen.
