Writing left-handed from left th right would cause the ink just put down to

Da Vinci is left-handed. Writing left-handed from left to right would cause the ink just put down to smear and get messy.

Does the line in bold in the above mean "A left-hander writing from left to right would cause the ink which is just put down to smudge?" Thanks.
