Writing LCCI -> 'we' instead of 'I'

Hi there,
is it common for correspondence in business English to write 'we' instead of 'I'? A student of mine did a task from an LCCI exam paper where he was required to write a report. In the 'recommendations' area he wrote 'We suggest that....' but it was he who was supposed to write the report. My question is: is it acceptable to write 'we' in such contexts? He means 'we the company' not 'I the person'; would it be a mistake at the exam?
Cheers,
M.

Hi, Broadly speaking, I'd use 'we' if speaking on behalf of the company to some other company. But I'd use 'I' if eg my boss asked me to analyze or find the solution to some problem. Clive
