WRITING IELTS TASK 2

Many museums and historical sites are mainly visited by tourists, not local people. Why this case and what is can be done to attract local people?

Recently has witnessed the low attendance of local residents at museums and historical attractions, while this figure for visitors is increasing gradually instead. In this essay, some elucidations will be put forward before solutions can be taken to tackle this problem.

With first regard, there are numerous reasons that leading to the local people’s lack of interest in historical places. First, these sites often present a comprehensive overview of history, custom and tradition of the area. Therefore, it seems to be more appealing for tourists, who desire to understand and discover the new cultures, than the locals, who are far too familiar with the daily life here. Second, the display of museums and historical houses tends to remain unchanged over the time. As a result, they can be visually unattractive for local inhabitants, who have come there at least once in their lifetime and no longer crave for the same layout again.

Fortunately, several measures can be prompted to encourage the regional citizens ‘attendance to these buildings. The main solution is to upgrade the display and decoration of museums and historical sites frequently, following up the different topics and themes monthly. If this change can be done, these destinations will draw both inbound and outbound visitors. In addition, monotonous activities should be replaced by more stimulating once, such as the photography competitions or the practical history lessons in school. Moreover, public attentions can be raised through media and advertisement. Television and Internet are the best tools for historians and preservationists promote the tremendous values of museums and historical remains.

In conclusion, although historical buildings might be uninteresting for local residents because they are accustomed to the cultures that are depicted, there are still various solutions to limit this case such as media coverage and open-door policies and activities.
