Writing ielts task 1

The line graph illustrates the percentage of the population aged 65 and over from 1940 to 2040 in three separate countries: Japan, Sweden and USA.

Overall, after 100 years, three countries see dramatic increase in the proportion of elderly people. In addition, the figure for Japan is lowest almost all the time surveyed.

In 1940, USA started off with the highest point, at about 9%, while the figure for Sweden and Japan were lower, at about 7% and 5% respectively. In the next 60 years, the percentage of the elderly in USA and Sweden grew dramatically. However, the figure for Japan went down gradually, reaching the bottom of the graph, at approximately 3%.

By 2040, the figure for USA is predicted to climb up significantly, while the percentage in Sweden is expected to fluctuate around 20% before increasing to about 25%. The period from 2020 to 2040 is likely to see a sharp rise in the proportion of elderly people in Japan. In 2040, this figure is expected to account for the highest point, at about 27%.
