Writing Fan Fiction

I'm in the middle of writing a fan fiction story. I'm fairly new at this and still learning about past and present tense.

The story I'm writing is in present tense though not too sure on how to write this sentence.

"Ben is shocked when he sees that is has gone past midnight." Is this correct or should it be was shocked.

Help would be grateful.

It depends on the viewpoint you want to use to tell the story. You can use the present or the past viewpoint.

Ben is shocked when he sees that it has gone past midnight.

Ben was shocked when he saw that it had gone past midnight.
