when writing a sentece in a story
which is better to use and why:

I went to Boston on February 2nd, 2002.

It's a matter of style, not grammar, so some people will tell you one and some the other. I say to use whichever you want, but be consistent throughout the piece. Don't say "February 2nd, 2002, in one place and March 5, 2003, somewhere else.
