I cannot understand the tense that we should use while writing a letter. I mean what is the time that should be considered to be present time: the letter writing time or the time when someone read it. Therefore, I got some questions while writing some conditional statements in a letter. Please someone let me know which of the following sentences are correct.
If you had not asked, I would not have written this letter.
If you had not asked, I would not write this letter.
If you had not asked, I would not be writing this letter.
I wouldn't call any of these wrong, but I'd use #3. It seems to best describe the situation at the time I am writing. Clive
