Writing about at thought

What is the correct method of writing how you once thought to yourself at a previous time? For example, how should I write this:
I remember how fast the skier flew down that mountain as I thought to myself "gee, this is only the intermediate slope."

Are the quotes necessary?
Thanks

Yes, thoughts are like speech: they can be either direct or indirect:

I thought/said, "Now I'm really in trouble!"
I thought/said that I was really in trouble then!
