writing a check

I was wondering if anyone can clarify the rule for writing out numbers. If I was to write a check, would I write eight hundred and twenty one dollars or eight hundred and twenty-one dollars or eight hundred twenty one/twenty-one dollars? When I say it, it is eight hundred and twenty one dollar.

Thanks.

If you were writing out a check and were writing a formal paper, which one would you use?

On a cheque, eight hundred and twenty-one dollars.

I don't know what you mean by 'on a formal paper'.

But in eg a business report, I'd probably write it as $821.
