Can we use simple vocabulary only but achieve a passing score in IELTS Writing Task 2? Is it possible?
The publicly available scoring system tells us about vocabulary usage: Band 5 - • uses a limited range of vocabulary, but it is minimally adequate for the task • may make noticeable errors in spelling and/or word formation that may cause some difficulty for the reader Band 6 - • uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task • attempts to use less common vocabulary but with some inaccuracy • makes some errors in spelling and/or word formation, but they do not impede communication Band 7 - • uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision • uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation • may produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling and/or word formation If you use sophisticated, high-level vocabulary incorrectly, it will detract from your score. If you have a choice of 1) using rare words that may be used incorrectly or 2) using simple words that express your ideas effectively, choose the second approach.
