2. Their poor knowledge is as shallow as a tray.

Yes and no. Grammarly would not find anything wrong, but every native English speaker would. The simile is odd. I suppose one expected simile would be a puddle. Also, such sentiments are usually expressed ironically, with the thing their knowledge is as deep as being a prime example of shallow
