Writing?

First, a shallow pan is smeared with a tiny amount of edible oil, using a makeshift brush so that the pancake won't stick to the pan. Then a ladle of batter are poured into the pan.

The passage is from an English Textbook for students. I think there are some mistakes in it. Please correct them.

While this is understandable, it is strange and uncommon. People generally talk of cooking oil but, when it is already clear what the context is, people generally just say oil. Choose one of the underlined parts.
