There are various ways to phrase this. One possibility would be:
He suffered cuts and bruises when he slipped and fell while climbing down from the tree.

For some reason cuts and bruises is more common than bruises and cuts.

Because would work if you were explaining how he got cuts and bruises that had already been mentioned. Otherwise when would be more natural.

When he climbed down the tree isn't wrong, but while climbing down from the tree is more natural.
