<Abstract>

As The Vegetarian and its translation won the Man Booker International Prize last May in 2016, it has been studied and analyzed a lot. However, there are not any researches in terms of the communication between a text by an author of the source language and a reader of the target language in its literary translation.

Hence, this study delved into the characteristics of literary translation and its strategies to compensate, focusing on communication as a goal of translation in chapter two and three. Among the compensation strategies that suggested by Baker, Vinay and Darbelnet, this study showed what compensation strategies were used frequently in translation of The Vegetarian with examples. Then, applying the 4 maxims of quantity, quality, relevance and manner from Grice’s conversation maxim, it is illustrated The Vegetarian was translated with proper compensation for target language readers in chapter five.

With all that, we found that the translator used plus explanation, idioms, superordinate and hypernym words as compensation strategies. Those made delivering the intense story and the character’s strong feeling to readers, To assess the translation quality by maxims, some maxims violated but all extracted sample translations obeyed the maxim of relevance. This allows both parties can communicate each other, so it is considered that translation of The Vegetarian successfully achieved its goal of an equivalence in reader’s acceptance and effective communication with proper compensation.

The implication of this study is that it was not followed the previous traditional evaluation, but applied new ways focused on a reader with a purpose of communication and analyzed The Vegetarian. This study will suggest a different view of literary translation evaluation. Still the Grice’s maxim has criticised in its utilization, and this study only targeted a single novel, which are considered as a limitation of the research.
