I see sentence 2 as the correction of sentence 1.

This is odd an unnatural because, "store" is another word for "shop" so, it is unnecessary and therefore wordy, to use both words. Supermarkets are a particular kind of shop/store so, it is unnecessary to write "and supermarkets" as if they are somehow, something completely different.

Your sentences would make sense and therefore be much better, if you rewrote that part with a / as: The general purpose of supermarkets and other kinds of shops/stores.

You also have the choice of writing it with just one of the words shop or store, as: The general purpose of supermarkets and other kinds of stores. or: The general purpose of supermarkets and other kinds of shops. Choose one of the underlined words.

But, the phrase "shop, stores and supermarkets" is taken from an article. In some places, these words are different from one another in meaning.

Was it written by a non-native speaker of English?

Just because something is published, that doesn't automatically mean that it is perfect in every way. Even books, the press and internet articles sometimes contain errors in language use and facts, as well as omissions of information. These things can happen, regardless of what an article is about orb who wrote it.

That is worth remembering.
