Writers' Priorities

Writers, like all people, differ from one another in their priorities. An actor approached me and nervously asked about the phrasing of a line and came up with another way of saying it. I replied, "Hey, if you're tripping over it the way I wrote it, say it another way, so long as it is true to the character and the original meaning of the line. The way you said it works, so that's cool." She was really surprised, and said that other writers were much more rigid about their lines.
I can say this about myself in my capacity as a writer (of sorts):
1. I don't care about grammar and the use of widely understood colloquialexpressions that aren't recognized in dictionaries, as long as the intended meaning is clearly conveyed. New words become "officially" accepted, and grammatical rules change every few years anyway, so I say *** grammar.
2. Actors can rephrase things so it rolls more smoothly off their tongues,as long as it is true to the character, the original meaning is retained, and any important verbal motifs or trademarks aren't sacritificed.

This is my stance. It is not more correct than those of other writers, nor more wrong.

I've written many song lyrics over the years. And I've met every shade of reaction from singer's that make a meal of a line because I write "I Cannot go on". They are too timid/dumb/unsure of themsleves/wary of the writer (these are choices, not cumulative character traits) to contract it to "I can't go on". And the other extreme is people that change everything in the middle of the night without

If the so-called bad grammar doesn't affect the clarity and meaning of the written work, I don't care. And not just dialogue. 'Cause that ain't where my priorities lie.

Dangerous stance... as a script full of spelling/grammar errors may find its way to the circular file.
