write/call off the first day of our vacation

We had to write off the first day of our vacation because of the typhoon.

Hi,
Does "write off" in the above amount to "call off?" Thanks.

No, not at all. Call off = cancel or postpone. Write off = abandon as unusable/unsolvable/unmanageable/etc.

Thanks, Mister.
But I'm still confused. Doesn't "write off" in the introductory sentence mean "cancel" and therefore "call off?"

Not as I read it-- they had to give up on the first day-- it was hopeless. They remained on vacation that day, they just couldn't do anything.
