Write vs write down

Hi,

'Listen and 'write'/'write down' your answers.'

In dictionaries,'write'and'write down' seem synonymous to me,but there seems to be differences I couldn't spot ,or maybe understand.Could you help and provide examples?

However, I would use "write down" if I wanted to make it crystal clear that the person receiving the instructions was to "write it down on a piece of paper using a pen or pencil". Write down your name, address and telephone number on a sheet of paper and pass it forward to the head of the class.
