Write Out Bills

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/18/fashion/weddings/18UNIONS.html

" 'When we were living together, when I would write out the bills, I never really gave a thought to how much money was going into the mail,' he said. As a husband, he said, 'I’d write out bills, total them up and go to the bank to make sure the amount I totaled up was in the bank.' "

What is "write out the bills"? I would have understood "pay the bills". According to dictionaries. "write out" means "fill out".

Hi,

In this context, I'd probably say 'write out cheques'. ( which means about the same as 'fill out cheques'.)

So, "bill" is another name for "cheque" ("check")? Could this be a regionalism?

Hi,

Yes, quite likely.
The underlying meaning is 'write out cheques to pay bills'.
