Write out

Does "were written out" in the following context mean "were revised", "were removed", or "were prohibited"?

Context:

The actors in cigarette advertisements were only to be shown in situations in which smoking would be appropriate; no association was to be struck between cigarettes and health, such as the use of outdoor settings, nor any association with either relaxation or concentration that might imply that cigarettes are an aid to these states. Also prohibited was the implication that smoking would enhance personal qualities such as manliness, courage or daring, as well as the featuring of real or fictitious persons of obvious distinction. In short, most of the stock methods employed in Capitalist Realist advertising were written out by the 1976 Code. Primarily, the idea that advertisements are meant to directly seduce or persuade the consumer to make a purchase was undermined.
