Write on my pencil

Dear teachers.

I read "write with a pen" or "write in pen" several times in English essay.

However, I found out 'writing on' in following sentence.

"I didn't lose any sleep over knowing that the writing on my pencil faed away frome me when I wrote."

what does 'writing on' mean that?

Many thanks in advance

Pencils, especially wooden ones, typically have the brand name embossed into the wood. The pencil might be painted with yellow enamel, and the brand name "stamped" into it with a contrasting color - typically gold or black or green. Wood pencil's typically have a hexagonal cross section, with the printing on only one face (side).
