Write in/on your notebook

My American friend said 'write in your notebook.'

But I found 'write on your notebook' from somewhere.

Is it different depending on English spoken countries?

I would normally only say 'write in your notebook.'

'write on your notebook' suggests on the outside of your notebook, on the cover.

Ah.. then as for a handout or handouts, the correct preposition is on, isn't it?

Right.

A handout has no 'inside' like a notebook does.
