Applying games in teaching English is a new trend for some years. This essay will discuss some advantages and disadvantages of using games in classroom following some reasons below.
Games play an integral role in teaching the target language because of some positive aspects bringing. First of all, this is the best way to review Vocabulary and Grammatical points of previous lessons which makes students not anxious. Instead of inviting some students to hold their notebooks and speak new words or write them on the board, teachers could stick some pictures on the board and call some students to play “Slap the board” or write the words below them. It is interesting for instructors to review and check their spelling and understanding; then they give students some marks. Next, it can encourage students to participate competitions and improve their communication competence. Some students are embarrassed and less confident in speaking English in class; however, they will try their best to practice and bring marks for their team. In Tic Tac Toe, there are nine squares filling with nine topics or keywords which team reach the first vertical, horizontal or diagonal line will be a winner; as the result, each member makes a huge attempt to create a sentence as perfect as possible to win the game.
Beside some advantages, there are still some disadvantages when games are used in teaching. It is difficult to engage all students in classroom to take part in the activities. Almost classes in high schools usually are crowded with different levels, some are extroverted, the others are introverted; consequence, some of them are not excited about games. Teachers do not have enough time to take care each student or cover all students. Furthermore, it is obvious that it takes instructors much time to give solutions by a wide range of problems during playing games. For instance, when teachers and pupils play “Hot seat” together; some students will ask teachers to check who raise his hand first or marks; sometimes some members conflict with their components… and so on. teachers will have to explain and resolve them; as the result, he is not able to follow the lesson plan.
In conclusion, games are extremely useful in teaching English if teachers know deeply understanding about positive and negative impacts. They should take full advantages of games and avoid make mistakes to help students gain the target of the lesson.
