Essay & Composition Writing

Write about a time when you witnessed an accident only to discover to that the victim was someone you knew.

‘There might be heavy downpour and the wind speed could be as high as 85km/h. All drivers please take note and be extreme careful when you drive.” The broadcaster reported.
‘Not again!’ I exclaimed while turning off the radio.
I was driving on the Bukit Batok expressway while I listened to the weather forecast. It was monsoon season and heavy storm had been hitting Singapore recently.
As I made another turn, raindrops started to hit the window panel making a faint sound. The noise became louder as the raindrops increased in amount. My windshield wiper shot up to life and began to wipe the raindrops that landed on the glass. There came a lightning that struck followed by a deafening roar of thunder. The leaves of the trees began to shake vigorously and passengers fought their way against the heavy downpour. Their clothes began to flag as they ran for shelter.
The rain seemed like a waterfall that poured mercilessly on the ground.
I stepped my brake as the lights turned red. As I scanned around the vicinity, something caught my eye. A tree with a thick bark was slanting to one side. As I watched the tree with curiosity, it started to stretch. My heart skipped a beat and I watched in dismay as the tree was uprooted by the strong wind. Its roots made their way to the topsoil and within minutes the tree lost it balance and fell straight onto a black car with a thundering crash.
A piercing scream was heard from the distance followed by the sound of shattered screen. I was paralysed with fear and was horrified to witness an accident. Drivers got out of their vehicles and ran towards the black car. The passengers watched in shock and people crowded at the vehicle.
I tried to compose myself and got out the car. Wild fragmented thoughts started to race through my mind. As I placed my foot near the vehicle, people were pulling the casualty out from the vehicle. Blood stained their face and they were in a coma state. I looked closely into the face which posed familiarity.
I was hit with fear upon studying the face. My lips trembled in fear and tears started to well up in my eyes. My hands went to my mouth as I watched in horror.
‘This can’t be.’ I muttered to myself as twenty over pair of eyes stared at me in curiosity.
‘Brother..Brother-in-law?” I questioned.
I fell onto the ground and tears sprung out uncontrollably. I buried my tear-stained face in my hands and sobs loudly. My mind went blank and the world seemed like spinning around me. My instinct told me that I should contact my mum. I fumbled for my phone in the pocket with badly shaken hands.
‘Mum? I..I afraid that brother-in-law met with an accident’ I managed while the sobs breaking loose.
The ambulance arrived the scene and brought my brother-in-law to the hospital for emergency unit.
From the experience, my brother-in-law sustained serious injury. Blessing in disguise, she woke up after weeks of coma. I experienced a nerve-wreaking experience that reminded me to pay attention to my surrounding when I am on the road.
