It is argued that function is most imperative in comparison with external beauty in any building’s plans. Although the exterior appearance plays a vital role in a building's utility, I agree that function should be highly valued compared to the outer surface.
It is undeniable that an impressive appearance would bring lots of benefits in designing buildings but it’s not affordable in all situations. Firstly, the magnificent looking of some buildings can contribute economic benefits to tourism. For example, the Imperial City of Hue has long been a must-see attraction for travelers all around the world by its breathtaking looking structure. Secondly, a beautiful home can indicate a person’s wealth when many wealthy people are willingly to spend lots of money on ornamental decorations. In fact, the price of prosperity streets is higher than normal-looking areas. However, the cost of these decorations might be unaffordable for ordinary-income people which account for the majority of the population.
However, the purpose is the key role when designing buildings. First of all, the functionality of a building can ensure dweller’s security. For instance, in many countries and especially Japan, most buildings tend to be designed with a stable structure which can withstand risks of natural disasters such as earthquake or tsunami. Furthermore, a building’s function may consist of an alarm system which can prevent incidents of thefts and burglaries. Besides, the purpose of building might offer a wide range of utility facilities in a limited space when the park, supermarket or schools would be built instead of green space. As a result, buildings can perform their intended purposes and enhance the sense of convenience for inhabitants. For example, hospitals need to be designed with a variety of rooms and equipment to serve medical aims.
In conclusion, while the outlook design of a building is very crucial, function still should be a top priority in any building’s plans.
