Write

Hi,

I always have a problem understanding the different meanings of the verb'write', 'write out', and 'write down'.I have used different dictionaries but I always seem to grasp only this meaning:'record something in writing.'

Can one use 'write' to mean 'write down' and 'write out'?

Thanks.

nsfs2 Can one use 'write' to mean 'write down' and 'write out'? Yes, in most cases. You might say that adding 'down' gives emphasis to the motion of the pen down onto the paper, where thoughts are recorded permanently, and adding 'out' gives emphasis to the concept of elaborating a thought completely in writing.

  • It is seldom absolutely necessary to add emphasis in this way.
