The following lyrics is where I first heard of it:
I'm a mess like kingdom come.My dictionary made little to no sense in this case and while I was looking for the meaning of wrecking away online, came across the following, which made it even more confusing...

My friends who are into soccer (or English football) tell me it is an expression that has something to do with that. From this, it appears that it has been generalized to other meanings, but I have no idea what those would be, as I don't follow soccer and don't even know what the original meaning is. Personally, I'm in to good old American football, and there was so much "wrecking away," (my own use of the term) this weekend that the league is talking about suspending players for head to head tackles.
